1. Introduction


There are probably more commonly held misconceptions among the general population concerning scientific topics than in any other field of knowledge. Some of these are widely believed, and unquestioningly accepted by many people, despite being completely and utterly wrong.
In this part of the site, I aim to correct some of these common misconceptions, and present the real facts. Some of them are pretty trivial, but others demonstrate many people’s quite staggering lack of knowledge of even the most basic science, or even of the principles on which science is based – and therefore highlight glaring deficiencies in our education system. In each case, I’ll also throw in a few interesting related facts.
For these readers who already understand these concepts – which I hope will be most of you - I hope this section will provide a useful reference, to which you can direct any of your friends who don’t!
